| 1704: | An Anglo-Dutch fleet under Admiral Sir George Rooke, with 1800 marines under Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt, captured Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain (War of the Spanish Succession). It has been a British possession ever since.
